Branch Newsletter

From the Chairman's Corner

We are off to a great start for the new dancing year although our numbers are down somewhat.  We need the support of all of our members old and new to make it possible to continue to offer the quality classes and events that the London Branch is respected for.

Welcome to the new dancers who have joined us.  We hope that you will have a joyful time dancing and learning about Scottish Country Dancing, and that you will tell all of your friends about it and encourage them to join next year!  If you have any questions about the organization please do not hesitate to speak to me or to any other member of the Committee of Management.

We have a very busy year ahead of us with many opportunities to dance, and I encourage you to come to all of your monthly dances - the Men’s dinner dance in November, our Christmas dinner dance, Hogmanay, Winterfest, the London Ceilidh and Workshop, and especially the London Spring Ball.  These events are the highlights of our dancing season- the reward for learning at the Wednesday and Friday classes.

Don’t forget to mark NOW on your calendar the upcoming dates of your Branch special events.  For your convenience, the dates are again listed below.

See you on the dance floor,

Brian

A SEASONAL REMINDER

Don’t forget to put a big red circle around Saturday, December 15/07.  It’s the date for our Christmas Celebration dinner and dance at the Lambeth Legion with Bobby Brown and the Scottish Accent.  The price is $45.00 for dancers and $25.00 for non dancers.  This includes a full course turkey dinner with all the trimmings.  Your participation helps to keep the price at a reasonable cost – so don’t miss this event.  The reception is at 6:00, the dinner at 6:30 and dancing starts at 8:00.  See you there!

MISCELLANEOUS

ANNUAL BRANCH AWARD

It is time to start thinking about who to nominate for the Annual Branch Award 2008 which is presented at the May Ball.  In 300 words or less outline why you think a member or members deserve this recognition because of their exceptional and long standing contribution and commitment to the London Branch.  This may be one person or a husband and wife nomination.  You may give your nomination to a member of the Committee of Management by December 31.  This date is necessary so that the Branch Award nomination may be sent to headquarters.  The actual award is signed by the Chairman of RSCDS and then sent to London for presentation at the Ball.  The nomination for the Branch Award should be done by the Branch members and not the Committee of Management.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

It is with sadness that we learned that John Dey died after a battle with cancer.  Our thoughts and sympathies go out to June, Ruth and family.

Those of us who danced with Mary Davidson are saddened by her recent death.  Our sympathy is extended to Andrena and family.

Also to Anne and friends of Stan Hamilton we extend our thoughts and condolences.  Stan was a recipient of the Scroll of Honor Award the highest award of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.  He was a well renowned band leader and a composer and arranger of Scottish dance music.  He had a special place in the hearts of Londoners as in early years he played for classes of the London Branch.

On a happier note the Branch congratulates Bobby Brown and Lisa Mitchell who were married on August 11/07

A REMINDER ABOUT MEMBERSHIP FEES

If you have not already done so, please pay your membership fees to Elfriede Rollo.  As well please update any changes of address to Sheilagh Manning.

The membership of the Branch has declined.  New members usually are encouraged to join because of a personal invitation.  Perhaps in your circle of friends there is someone who would respond to an invitation to join our group.  New people may join until the end of October.

SOME WEBSITES AND CONTACT INFORMATION FOR NEARBY SCD GROUPS

Members are strongly encouraged to take advantage of dancing opportunities in nearby cities.  Information about dances, workshops and other events is always available on our bulletin board and online.  Most groups, including ours, offer hospitality for out-of-town friends attending SCD events.  It is a great way to make new friends and to lower the expense of traveling, so please volunteer to bed and breakfast.

AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE – Marie Mclennan

On a recent trip to Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Bill and I picked up a brochure at the Tourist Information Centre about “Les Lundis Folkloriques” a group of dancers and musicians who get together to practise traditional music and dances.  This group met at “l’hotel de ville” in Huberdeau, a very small village.

When we arrived, the musicians were still getting set up.  There was a keyboard and five or six fiddlers.  As we sat there, more people came in and it seemed that every other one of them was carrying a case of some sort-mostly violin cases.  When it was time to start, there was a total of 21 musicians and about fifty dancers some of whom were experienced and some who were not.

A few people spoke some English and they really went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to include us in the dancing-we were the only outsiders.  They had callers who walked us through the dances.  Many of the formations were similar to ours-hands across, grand chain, ladies’ chain etc., so once we saw what was to be done we managed.  We certainly didn’t understand most of what was said.  Most of the dances we did that night were done in squares.  The dancing was not as strict-tempo as ours and there were no particular steps-just mainly walking.  There was no bow-and curtsy.  The music started and after a few bars, the caller told us to start.  The dance usually finished before the music did and everyone stood and clapped in time until the musicians stopped.

Besides the dancing, one lady (whose maiden name was Douglas) played a violin solo, a young chap sang, and an older gentleman played the saw just for the two visitors.  I just wish we had had a video camera with us.  The musicians played selections just for listening, but a few people got up and did some step dancing.  It actually turned out to be a ceilidh.

We talked to a gentleman whose first language is English (he came for England, but now lives in St.Agathe).  Now in retirement, he makes violins.  We saw one of them that evening and it was beautiful.  One young lady was being allowed to play it that evening and she was really excited about it.  The gentleman told us that of all the musicians (total complement about 33), he is the only one who actually reads music.  The rest have learned by listening.

There was no admission fee.  The only expense that evening was for a bottle of water and the fifty-fifty tickets.  (Bill didn’t win).
